Fruits and veggies available at Helping Harvest thanks to TCI of NY

Where would we be without the support of the local business community? We're so grateful to our friends at TCI of NY for their recent generosity. The company, which recycles, disposes of and repairs transformers and other oil-filled electrical equipment, made a donation of $1,000 to Hope Full Life Center so we can purchase fresh fruits and veggies for our food assistance program, Helping Harvest.

Finding low-cost sources of fresh produce is difficult for our little charity, yet we believe providing it for low-income families in our community is part of our mission. If Helping Harvest can't offer fruit and veggies it often means the people we serve go without and don't get the critical nutrition they need.

According to Cooking Matters (cookingmatters.org) report IT’S DINNERTIME: A Report on Low-Income Families’ Efforts to Plan, Shop for and Cook Healthy Meals, 85% of low-income families recognize the importance of healthy meals, but often pass on purchasing healthy foods, especially produce, because of price. Instead these families are more likely to stretch their food dollars by purchasing foods with refined grains, sugar and fats, which are lower in cost and satisfying (Food Research & Action Center).

This is where Helping Harvest steps in for families with demonstrated need: We can offer fresh produce for a modest donation, typically a quarter or less of retail prices. We thank TCI of NY for helping us keep a steady supply of fresh produce on our shelves.
