Americans are struggling to pay their living expenses. According to a survey conducted by CNN in June, nearly 40% of US adults are anxious their income isn't enough to cover expenses. The pressure is worse for Latino (52%) and Black Americans (46%) who worry they can't keep up. (1)
CNN's survey results were issued in late July. Among other results, two-thirds of Americans (65%) report that cost of living expenses are the biggest financial hurdle for their family.
"Members tell us they are struggling to afford food and all their other bills because the cost of everything has increased," said Rebecca Flach, executive director of Hope Full Life Center, Inc., the charity that runs Helping Harvest, our food assistance program for vulnerable families.
According to CNN, Moody’s Analytics says households are spending $925 more per month to purchase the same products and services they did in 2021. To make ends meet, families reported cutting back on entertainment and extras, taking on side jobs, reducing driving and racking up credit card debt. (2)
Locally, people are also turning in greater numbers to Helping Harvest. Through September 27, 2024, Helping Harvest has added 99 new members. The program added 120 new families to the program in 2023.
"We're seeing many new members who are employed, but their paychecks can't keep up with rising prices," said Flach. "Families worry they have to choose between eating and paying rent or utility bills."
At Helping Harvest we try to fill in the gap between food pantries and traditional grocery stores by offering lots of nutrition and choice for prices lower than struggling families will find elsewhere, including at discount stores.
"Thank you for being here. It really helps," one Helping Harvest member recently shared with our team.
